What is gLite?

  • gLite provides several services for grid usage such as Computing Element, Storage Element, and File Catalog.
  • These services can be categorized in site-specific services, central gLite services and virtual organization-specific services.
  • gLite is only one grid flavor and at present widely used in EGEE/ EGI and D-Grid. Other grid middlewares are e. g. Globus Toolkit, UNICORE, and ARC.
  • One of the central services in the gLite middleware is the information system consisting of BDII_site and BDII_top services. They discovery service. All available grid services and their status are listed in this system.

Where to get it?

The middleware releases and a lot of other information on gLite can be found at [1]. You will see different releases available: gLite 3.0, gLite 3.1 and gLite 3.2. The 3.0 release is no longer supported and should not run anymore.

The release change from 3.1 to 3.2 is currently ongoing and includes a change of the underlying operating system. Where gLite 3.0 ran on Scientific Linux CERN 3 (32 Bit) and gLite 3.1 on Scientific Linux 4 (32 Bit and few on 64 Bit) the new release 3.2 runs on 64 Bit Scientific Linux 5 or Debian 4 systems.

Setting up a gLite service requires usually two steps:

  • installation of the required software packages. This is done using the yum (Yellowdog Updater, modified) which is an automatic updater and package installer/remover for rpm systems.
  • configuration of the installed software packages. In gLite this is done by YAIM (YAIM Ain't an Installation Manager)
